French Horn - Fortissimo in class

Do you know which modern instrument originated from a hunting horn? And what does it look like now? And why is it depicted on the postal sign?

Of course, this is a French horn, which was originally used for signals during hunting, at ceremonial events and for military signals.

Krasimir Kostadinov introduced our students to this interesting instrument on January 27, 2025 in the series ‘Fortissimo in Class’.

Initially, the French horn was without valves (valves) and only natural tones from the scale were played on it by overtones (in the order of overtones). At the beginning of the 19th century, the French horn was improved with valve mechanics and acquired its current appearance.
